Halloween is often associated with costumes, masks, decorations, and things that are meant to surprise or frighten us. But sometimes, I think Halloween can also give us a reason to reflect on something much deeper: what we show to others and what we keep beneath the surface.
We all wear different kinds of âmasksâ in life.
Sometimes a mask is literalâa costume we put on for Halloween. Other times, it can be the smile we wear when we are having a difficult day, the confidence we show when we are uncertain, or the quietness we use when we donât know how to explain what we are feeling.
There is nothing wrong with keeping some things private. Not everything in our lives needs to be shared publicly, and we donât owe everyone access to our personal stories.
Iâve been thinking more about this as I continue sharing parts of my life through Robb Paddy Journey. There is a difference between being authentic and revealing everything.
Being authentic doesnât mean telling everyone everything.
It means being honest about who we are while also having the wisdom to recognize that some parts of our journey are meant to remain personal.
That takes discernment.
Sometimes, the most meaningful growth happens quietlyâaway from social media, away from other peopleâs opinions, and away from the pressure to explain ourselves.
Halloween reminds us that appearances can be deceiving. Someone may look happy while carrying something difficult. Someone who seems confident may still have doubts. Someone who is quiet may have a lot going on beneath the surface.
We may never know the whole story.
And perhaps thatâs a reminder to be a little more patient and compassionate with one another.
I donât want to judge someone simply by what I see on the outside. I also donât want to feel pressured to prove who I am by sharing everything about myself.
There is freedom in knowing that I can choose what to share, when to share it, and with whom.
A costume comes off at the end of Halloween.
But the person underneath it is still there.
Maybe thatâs the real reflection for me: Who am I when I donât need to wear a mask?
I want to keep walking through life with honesty, kindness, faith, and purposeânot trying to impress everyone, but simply becoming more comfortable with who God created me to be.
As Halloween comes and goes, the decorations will eventually come down, the costumes will be put away, and another ordinary day will begin.
But the deeper question remains:
What do we choose to show the worldâand what do we choose to keep between ourselves and God?
Sometimes, wisdom isnât found in revealing more.
Sometimes, wisdom is knowing what doesnât need to be revealed at all.
đ Keep walking. Keep growing. And rememberâthere is more to every person than what we see on the outside.
